Product Questions

Why are you testing alternative closures?

Clos du Bois uses both traditional wood corks and alternative closures. For more than three years, Clos du Bois, along with several other super-premium wineries, has been testing a variety of alternative closure products. Synthetic corks preserve the tradition of opening a bottle of wine, while eliminating the spoilage that can occur from leakage, oxidation and cork taint (a microbial growth on natural cork that leaves the wine tasting like wet newspaper.)

  • Synthetic corks cost about the same as our standard wood corks and help to eliminate these adverse effects.
  • We are using these corks in some of our wines in order to attain a higher standard of consistency and quality.
  • If you would like to read more about alternative cork closures and the ongoing industry issues with failed wood corks, check out this excellent article written by winewriter Steve Pitcher for The Wine News.
Why do crystals sometimes form in wine?

Crystals discovered at the bottom of a bottle, or as deposits on the bottom of a cork, are probably potassium bitartrate, commonly referred to in Europe as "wine diamonds." The same ingredient as Cream of Tartar, tartrate crystals look very much like glass but are completely harmless and occur naturally in wines. Tartaric acid is the primary acid found in grapes, just as citric acid is found in oranges and lemons. In wine, tartaric acid binds with potassium, also occurring naturally in grapes, and sometimes forms potassium bitartrate crystals.

» To ensure that the crystals are, in fact, tartrates, take one of the crystals and dissolve it in hot water or crush it with the back of a spoon.

If you find tartrates in your wine, simply stand the bottle upright, undisturbed, until the particles settle to the bottom of the bottle. Then pour the wine slowly into a decanter or wine glass.

How should I store my wine?

Store all wines – white, rosé and red – in a cool dark, slightly humid place free from dramatic temperature changes. Chill white wines 1-2 hours in the refrigerator or wine chiller – serve at around 55° F. Red wines should be served at about 62-65° F, chill for 15-30 minutes before serving to achieve "cool room temperature." All opened wine should be corked and stored in the refrigerator. Return reds to cool room temperature before serving.

Are your wines organic?

Our wines are not certified organic. We have been awarded, however, for our commitment to the environment and our sustainable and fish-friendly farming practices. Read more.

Are your wines gluten-free?

Are you a French winery?

Nope! Clos du Bois was founded in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County in 1974.

How was the winery named?

Here is the legend of how Clos du Bois got its name: The name is loosely translated to "enclosure of the woods." The Oxford French Dictionary gives several definitions for "Clos." It is used here as it pertains to terrain, "fenced or enclosed field; orchard; vineyard." Bois translates to "wood" or "woodland." The winery name was a play on the founder's name: Frank Woods. He was originally going to name the winery "Woods Vineyards" but his children, who were reportedly studying French at the time, suggested the more interesting name "Clos du Bois" instead.
